Who Can Support an SOWP Application?

To sponsor your spouse for an open work permit, you must be enrolled in one of the following designated programs:

  • Master's or Doctoral Degrees: Enrolled in a full-time graduate degree program at a PGWP-eligible university or college.
  • Professional Degree Programs: Enrolled in professional undergraduate streams (such as Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B./J.D.), or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy).
  • Proof of Enrollment: You must provide a valid letter of enrollment, a transcript, and proof of active full-time status at your DLI when submitting your spouse's work permit application.

SOWP Application Requirements

In addition to the student's program requirements, you must provide documentation proving a genuine relationship and financial viability:

  • Proof of Relationship: A valid marriage certificate or proof of common-law relationship (minimum 1 year of continuous cohabitation).
