Urgent PR Card Processing Guide
Understand when IRCC may consider a permanent resident card request urgent, what evidence to provide and when a PRTD may be the better option.
Urgent processing is not guaranteed.
IRCC says urgent processing is available only in certain circumstances and that even when you qualify, it cannot guarantee that the PR card or travel document will arrive before your travel date.

Current urgent-processing situations
IRCC's published urgent-processing reasons include:
- A job opportunity.
- Work related to your current job.
- Your own serious illness.
- Serious illness or death of a family member.
- Loss or theft of your PR card while temporarily outside Canada.
- Crisis, emergency or vulnerable situation.
For urgent PRTD applications, IRCC may also consider other reasons it considers legitimate.
What to submit with an urgent PR-card request
- Proof of travel showing your destination and travel dates, such as an itinerary or ticket.
- A copy of the trip receipt showing the date, amount paid and payment method.
- A letter explaining why the request is urgent and giving the relevant travel date.
- Proof supporting the urgent reason, such as a doctor’s note, death certificate or employer letter, where applicable.
- English or French translations for documents that are not already in English or French, where required.
- Clear, readable copies of all supporting documents.
Do not rely on a ticket alone. IRCC asks for both proof of travel and evidence explaining and supporting the urgency.

If you are outside Canada: PRTD
A Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) is generally used by a permanent resident who is outside Canada without a valid PR card and needs to return by commercial transportation.
- An urgent PRTD request can apply when your return flight is within the next 5 days and you meet the requirements.
- Supporting material can include your itinerary/ticket, payment receipt, urgency letter and evidence such as a doctor's note, death certificate or employer letter.
- The PRTD fee is $50 CAD.
- After you return to Canada, apply for a PR card if you still need one.

If you are leaving Canada in more than 3 weeks and your existing PR-card application is already in process, IRCC instructs applicants to use its web form and submit proof of travel, the travel receipt, a letter explaining the urgency and evidence supporting the urgent reason. If the situation does not qualify, IRCC will process the application normally.
The PR-card application fee is $50 per person for a new application, renewal or replacement. The Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) fee is also $50 per person. Urgent processing does not create a separate PR-card application fee in the current IRCC fee schedule.
If you are a permanent resident outside Canada without a valid PR card, you generally need a valid PRTD to board commercial transportation to Canada. IRCC says that without a valid PR card or PRTD, a permanent resident can travel to Canada by land using a private vehicle, subject to the applicable border-entry requirements. After returning to Canada, you should apply for a PR card if you still need one.
